Bodegas Matsu, itself a Japanese word meaning “to wait”, specialises in sustainable and environmentally-friendly methods of small-scale wine production. The brain child of Jose Miguel and Raul Acha Arambarri, this up and coming winery is one to watch out for.
El Viejo (the “old guy”) is made from selected grapes from century old vines. Harvested late, beginning of October, and aged for 16mths in French oak. The wine is full bodied with an intensity of dark, black fruits. From the prolonged barrel-aging you get smoky notes well balanced with some toasted notes. Tannins are rounded and mature and the finish is long.
